Koshi Tappu is a lowland floodplain and confluence of multiple Himalayan rivers in the southeastern part of Nepal. The habitat type for this wildlife reserve is mostly marshes, wet grassland, impounded rivers, and riverine forests. Some parts of this wildlife reserve are dry and constitute scrub patches as well. A large number of passage migrants and waterfowl arrive in this wetland in winter from the higher Himalayas or central Asia. The Central Asian flyway passes through this wildlife reserve making it an IBA and Ramsar site for the country.
This wildlife sanctuary hosts Ducks, Gooses, Plovers, Lapwings, Pochards, Harriers, Large Eagles, Crakes, Pelicans, Bush Warblers, Reed Warblers, Crakes, Chats & Allies, and Grassbirds in big numbers from Autumn to winter till early spring. Some of the interesting and endangered grassland species from Koshi Tappu Wildlife Reserve include Bengal Florican, Swamp Francolin, and Bristle Grassbird. A couple of Vulture species are also recorded from this birding hotspot of eastern Nepal.
Kanchenjunga Conservation Reserve on the higher elevation is home to nearly 400 plus recorded bird species of adjoining Sikkim and Darjeeling hills of India. The guardian deity - mount Kanchenjunga to all religious groups is the adobe for all. This is the best place where multiple pheasant species can be sighted along with the magnificent Red Panda. For the Red Panda only, people come here to experience the elusiveness of this near-threatened species in the wild. The early morning calls echo through the gorges - for Himalayan Monal and Satyr Tragopan mesmerize the birdwatchers visiting this sanctuary.
There are numerous species of Timaliidae babblers - Scimitar Babblers, Leiothrixes, Shrike-babblers, Wren Babbler, Cupwings, Shortwings, Tesias, Minlas, and more to witness while one visits this magnificent Conservation reserve of eastern Nepal.
Day 1: The guests will be picked up from Kathmandu Airport and from there we will fly to Biratnagar Airport. From this local airport, it will take just 1 hour to arrive at Koshi Tappu Wildlife Reserve. In the afternoon. We will explore the outskirts of the park and later by evening we might check out for some out species. Overnight at resort at Koshi Tappu.
Day 2, Day 3 & Day 4: For three consecutive full days we will explore the grasslands by boat and on foot for the different grassland species of the reserve. Overnight at resort at Koshi Tappu.
Day 5: Today morning, we will start leisurely after breakfast from the resort. If we start by 9 AM in the morning from Koshi Tappu; it is expected that we will arrive at Ilam by 1 PM. Here we will have lunch at a restaurant. From Ilam, via Nayabazar we will reach to Jaubari (2 hours drive) for our next few days of exploration in Kanchenjunga Conservation Area. Overnight at Jaubari.
Day 6 to Day 10: We have five full days to explore the different axis along Jaubari, Kalapokhri, Lamey Dhura, Jogmai, Tumling, Sandakpur to explore the wilderness of far east Nepal adjoining Darjeeling Hills of India. Red Panda will be our prime target while we are out in the field. Otherwise we will also explore for some of the targeted bird species from the region. For all these days we will be staying in the homestays at Gorkhe or Lameydhura.
Day 11: Today we will start leisurely after five days of continues exploration in the wilderness of eastern Nepal Himalayas. We will start after breakfast from Gorkhey and drive downhill. We will arrive in the plains of Nepal with 2 and half hours of driving; here we are going to have lunch. After lunch we will fly back to Kathmandu Airport from Bhadrapur Airport. In the afternoon we will check in at the hotel at Kathmandu. In the evening you can explore the town and visit some of the historical sites of the city. Overnight at Kathmandu.
Day 12: Depending on your departure flight, we will check out from Kathmandu Hotel and drop you at the airport.
