Sukhim – The state of Sikkim, with a rich abundance of avian fauna as compared with the other neighboring Himalayan countries with the same zoo-geographic features, is located in the area of the mega biodiversity hotspot of the Eastern Himalayan region. The state is embraced by more than 590 species of birds. The state is also unique as a destination on the birdwatchers' canvas of the world. Nature is bountiful in gifting Sikkim with great landscapes, forests, streams, rivers, glaciers, lakes, snow-capped mountains, and cold deserts. All these beautiful gifts are wrapped in different flavors of indigenous social practices, knowledge, exotic cultures, and rich ethno-ornithological traditions.
Most of the natural treasures are located in the protected Areas (PAs) under the Forests, Environment, and Wildlife Management Department (FEWMD), Government of Sikkim. It is of utmost necessity that we conserve this natural heritage and at the same time open our doors to welcome bird watchers all over the world.
Sierra Birds is a Sikkimese Travel and Tourism company that provides Birdwatching, Bird Photography, and Birding Excursion services. The company was founded in 2022 in Gangtok and is headquartered in Central Pendam, Pakyong District, East Sikkim has been registered under the Sikkim Registration of Tourist Trade Rules, 2008 vide Serial No 1495 Registration No. 1495/DoT&CAv/E/22/TA Volume no. 1 Dated 14/10/2022.
Sierra Birds was founded by Nisha Sharma (Dhungel) in Central Pendam, Rangpo, Pakyong District, Sikkim, India. Its initial capital was ₹80,000. Nisha Sharma Dhungel is native to Sikkim and wanted to establish her entrepreneurship in SIkkim. Since her childhood, she was influenced by her maternal uncle Nirmal Dhungana in the field of travel and tourism. Later after finishing her Arts Graduation from Sikkim University in 2013, she studied further and completed Masters studies at Calcutta University in 2015. From 2016 onward, through a joint venture of the Japan International Cooperative Agency (JICA) and the Forest Environment and Wildlife Management Department (FEWMD) a project on eco-tourism and hospitality management appeared in her village. She actively participated and completed the courses on Homestay Management in 2016 and Birdwatching guiding training in 2017. She is also a member of BNHS, and keeps herself updated on nature, birdwatching and ecotourism. She foresees as a tour operator specializing in the core birdwatching tourism and wants to contribute to bird guide resource development as a part of projects through government and non-government agencies.
